Perseid Meteor Shower 2012 :: Mount Evans Colorado

The Perseid Meteor Shower

When I heard about the Perseid meteor shower I decided early on that I wanted to try and shoot it from the summit of Mount Evans in Arapaho National Forest. One of my main photography passions is astrophotography and the long exposure star trail; but I thought I'd try some shorter-exposure high-ISO work with the 5D3, to capture "frozen" stars with a meteor streak in the shot. I realize that getting such a shot requires a lot of luck, but I set out with this goal in mind none the less...

First Proof Prints of Red Rocks Photos Arrive!!

First Proof Prints of Red Rocks Photos Arrive!!

Red Rocks Photo Contest

After winning the Red Rocks Photography contest last year, I began receiving requests for posters and prints of some of the photos. Getting some of these images prepared for printing was a rather onerous task, since I wanted to ensure they could be printed at large sizes while still retaining a high level a quality. This attention to detail required some long nights of editing, however, I think it has finally paid off.

My first set of photo proofs have arrived back from the printer, and I couldn't be more pleased. While these are only 8x10 proofs, they have enough detail for me to authorize larger prints. I also plan to have a page up in the coming days where prints from my Red Rocks collection can be ordered directly. The first set will be a small collection of 3-4 prints, but I will be expanding this as additional photos are prepped for printing.

If you are interested in ordering a print from my Red Rocks photo set, please feel free to contact me directly.

Tokina Announces 11-16mm f/2.8 MarkII Lens Update!!

Tokina Announces 11-16mm f/2.8 MarkII Lens Update!!

According to Canon Rumors and The-Digital-Picture, Tokina will be offering a MarkII update to their famed 11-16mm ultra wide angle lens for Nikon and Canon mounts this spring!! Personally, this is some of the most exciting news I've read in a long time. I have always been a big fan of Tokina's original 11-16mm lens, and regardless of some of its shortfalls, it is still my primary lens for landscape and astrophotography. I truly can't wait for the update to come for Canon mounts - even though we have to wait a few months longer than the Nikon boys. A translated spec sheet is provided below (credit Canon Rumors):

Astrophotography :: Jupiter Nearing Opposition

Astrophotography :: Jupiter Nearing Opposition

The featured photo for this post, from NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day page, was posted in recognition of Jupiter nearing opposition. The caption, from NASA, is as follows:

On October 29 (UT), Jupiter, the solar system's largest planet, will be at opposition, opposite the Sun in planet Earth's sky, shining brightly and rising as the Sun sets. That configuration results in Jupiter's almost annual closest approach to planet Earth, so near opposition the gas giant offers earthbound telescopes stunning views of its stormy, banded atmosphere and large Galilean moons. This sharp snapshot of Jupiter was captured on October 13 with the 1 meter telescope at the Pic Du Midi mountain top observatory in the French Pyrenees.

Tokina Acknowledges Pairing Issue with 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens and Canon 7D? Kind of:

Since upgrading to the Canon 7D I have been experiencing repeatable auto-focus problems with my ultra-wide angle Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens. The problems occurred whenever using any of the manually selected AF points outside the center point. Focus would be inconsistent, often resulting in images with soft focus, or totally out of focus. Since the lens originally worked flawlessly on my Canon 40D with manually selected AF points, I decided to send it in to THK Photo Products (Tokina's US servicer) in California for service/repair. About two weeks after shipping my lens out, I received the following email from THK's service representative on June 13, 2011:
